Rules? In a Knife Fight? No Rules!

Last Thursday’s KnifeFight Showcase at the Northside Festival was a blast! Many thanks to everyone who came out! SB and Rocky Business held it down and slayed the crowd. Thanks to Mad Ave Boys, Rad Out, Wckids, Skotch Davis, Azores, Filthy Savage, and Father Dude.

Thanks to Mighty Mitch for running the grill. And many thanks to Shea Stadium!

Till the next Northside Fest!

MoMA PS1’s historic Warm Up music series begins July 3 and will take place every Saturday, 2pm to 9pm, through September 4, 2010.

This year’s Warm Up takes a new curatorial direction. The program was conceived by a curatorial committee who, with their wide spectrum of experiences in the music and performing arts fields, will generate a unique blend of genres, ranging from hip hop to R & B, disco to soul, indie pop to experimental orchestration, and electronic to New Orleans street music.

Selected by MoMA PS1 Director Klaus Biesenbach, the committee includes Dean Bein, head of True Panther Sounds; Kris Chen, head of A & R at XL Recordings; Robin Carolan, of 20 Jazz Funk Greats and head of Tri Angle Records; Jonathan Galkin, manager and cofounder of DFA Records; Ronen Givony, founder of Wordless Music and music director for Le Poisson Rouge; and Brandon Stosuy, senior writer for Stereogum and contributing editor for The Believer. Seva Granik, independent curator, supported the curatorial committee as stage and bookings manager. The Warm Up curatorial committee includes the support of Eliza Ryan as external advisor.

For realz… Big Freedia, Rusty Lazer, Animal Collective, Delorean, Gavin Russom, ?uestlove, Kingdom… Long Island City Saturdays, behBAY!

Les Savy Fav closed out this year’s NorthSide Festival with lewd and raucous performance. In all seriousness, Les Savy Fav has the best live show on earth. Between power punk jams, frontman Tim Harrington bantered about impending condo development and escaping the police by fleeing across county lines to Queens… all the while pouring water on concert goers, skateboarding through the crowd, stealing women’s purses, and generally molesting himself. A great time was had by all!

One of my favorite LSF videos…

After the NorthSide Festival screening of Life During Wartime at IndieScreen, Todd Solondz took the stage to answer questions and discuss his latest film, a sequel of sorts to his 1998 film Happiness.

Life During Wartime may just be his best film yet. And Solondz, frail and perhaps even more cynical in his older age, discussed the difficulties of screening his films. “Audiences can be ingenuous,” he said. “Laughter can be ingenuous.” And when pressed by the moderator as to whether he thought his films were funny or sad, Solondz quickly dismissed him. “I think my films are both funny and sad,” Solondz said. “I think life is like that.”
